ASbA of the Year - Highly Commended

Cyrus Wren commenced a Certificate III in Business as an ASbA with the Australian Training Company and is hosted at the ACT Education Directorate.

From an early age, Cyrus was eager to join the public service, but he did not know how to get there. When Cyrus first learned about ASbAs, he was able to connect his career aspirations with an achievable pathway while attending Dickson College.

The team Cyrus works with at the Education Directorate values his input and as result Cyrus is involved in program design and implementation, along with promotion of ASbAs.


ASbA of the Year – Winner

Hannah Holford completed the Certificate III in Individual Support with Quest Training Solutions. She is employed by the Australian Training Company and has undertaken her work placement at Carey Gardens, in association with Baptist Care.

Hannah has been involved with volunteering since year nine and she is always looking for ways she can make a difference to her community. Hannah uses her passion and energy to brighten the lives of elderly residents in aged care. She appreciates the opportunity to learn from and work with older Canberrans and is an advocate for increasing the number of people taking up a career in aged care.

Hannah is also completing a tertiary package at Lake Tuggeranong College in conjunction with her ASbA and intends to keep her options open for further education and training.

ASbA of the Year – Finalist

Isabella Denis commenced a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation with Orbus3. She is currently employed as an ASbA with the Australian Training Company in the Women in Construction Pathways Program. She has previous experience as a steel fixer and is enthusiastic to develop her skills and knowledge in the construction industry.

Isabella simultaneously juggles many competing priorities to manage a healthy work-life balance. At Canberra College, she has responsibilities as house captain, represents the ACT in various sporting activities and is involved with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Program. As part of the Women in Construction Pathways Program, Isabella mentors others to guide them through the program and complete their rotations.

Isabella's trainers and supervisors describe her as cheerful, positive, professional and curious to learn. On completion of her qualification, Isabella hopes to pursue a career in construction.

ASbA of the Year – Finalist

Cody Jagoe-Shaw commenced a Certificate III in Individual Support with Quest Training Solutions. She is employed by the Australian Training Company and is hosted at Black Mountain School.

Cody chose this industry and training pathway as she has a passion for supporting people living with a disability. This commitment is inspired by her mother who is a teacher in the learning support unit at a primary school. Cody promotes vocational education and training as an important pathway and believes that she has gained invaluable life experience during her ASbA. With the support of Quest Training Solutions and Black Mountain School, her skills have grown immensely, especially her ability to communicate and engage in meaningful ways with others.

Cody's ASbA has given her the confidence to pursue her other interests and passions. She is working towards building an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student network for herself and her peers.

The ACT Council of Social Services (ACTCOSS) is developing an ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway (ACTCSCG) to increase knowledge and promote awareness of career pathways within and across the ACT community sector.

The Community Sector Career Survey for Young People aims to capture the interests, ideas, barriers, and perceptions of community sector careers for young people in the ACT. To help inform the design and development of the Gateway, please complete the survey below. Surveys will close on 31 May 2022.

Employment Pathway Program – Aquatics (Posted: 04/05/2022)

A new Employment Pathway Program has been developed to allow year 10 – 12 students and school leavers graduating by 30th June 2022, to gain the opportunity to participate in a Swim Teacher and/or Pool Lifeguard training course. These courses can lead to tangible employment pathways and careers in the ACT Aquatic Industry.

An Expression of Interest form for the program will open 6 May and close at 5pm 13 June.

myfuture is hosting a free industry insights webinar with the Australian Business & Community Network (ABCN) focusing on the Construction Industry. The construction industry includes residential and non-residential building, civil engineering and building structure services. Register for this event and listen to a panel of industry representatives discuss topics such as:

- where the jobs are - skills shortages, specific occupations
- changes expected in the future and emerging occupations
- diversity and inclusion in their company
- skill gaps of school leavers/new grads
- impacts of automation affecting the workforce
- employability skills and training sought
- how to find employment in the industry.

The panelists are very willing to answer questions throughout the event.

Employment Pathway Program (Aquatics) - EOI Open Now

The expression of interest for the Employment Pathway Program (Aquatics) is officially open and can be accessed here. This program is an opportunity for students aged 16 years or older to gain nationally recognised competencies within the Aquatics Industry. Students will be supported to progress to casual, part-time, or full-time employment as a qualified pool lifeguard or swim teacher. School leavers can undertake this program fee-free via JobTrainer, with fee for service training being provided to non-school leavers.

Applications for the program open Friday 6 May, closing Monday 13 June, with training commencing in term 3.
